Brief Description of the Project:

The study aimed to draw a picture of the different types of everyday violent interactions between 13 to 16 year olds in disadvantaged neighbourhoods in Austria, Estonia, Finland and the U.K.. Furthermore, the study focused on the impact of direct or indirect involvement in peer violence in the public space: How do young people experience and interpret it, how do they deal and cope with it in their daily routine? Responding to these questions, qualitative research methods gave young people the chance to explain their own point of view. In the interpretation process, particular attention was paid to gender and ethnicity as relevant categories for the understanding of the researched phenomenon. The project was completed rounded off by a cross-national analysis and recommendations. The book „Portraits of Peer Violence in Public Space. Experiences from Young People in Four Localities in Europe" presents the project design as well as the main findings from the study.
