Brief Description of the Project:

In Austria, migrant workers from Turkey and ex Yugoslavia are still exposed to social inequalities. The study examines the situation of migrant young people from Turkey and former Yugoslavia in the education system and the labour market in Vienna. We concentrate on the second generation of migrants, because little data are available on the offspring of labour migrants ("guest workers") in Austria. The study comprises two parts: First, a quantitative analysis outlines the position of young migrants in Vienna. Second, the qualitative approach enables us to explain processes underlying their situation. Therefore, 30 qualitative interviews were conducted that focussed on how educational and vocational decisions are taken. As the study is based upon theories of social capital, we examine the influence of the young migrant's social capital on these decisions.
